What's wrong with using the stock one on the original muffler only? I don't see any advantage at all to having at the end of the 2nd muffler. Plus it is already bolted on and just needs the tip cut off and the u-bend welded on. It would be a lot more work involved having one at the end of the 2nd one for no real benefit.
Does the add on muffler have a spark arrestor? If you ride in a national forest and a spark arrestor is required, can you show? Maybe I am missing something but, I would move to end of last muffler. 1) To show proof 2) To clean if necessary. Probably no way a SPARK could make it past two but, ya never know if the Popo will realize that. Perhaps I have misread though. If so, I apologize.

No, since it is a replacement Toyota Tacoma muffler. But I think if you explained the original muffler still has the spark arrestor in it and how the new one was attached, a reasonable officer would have no problem with it. Can't imagine they would give you a hard time over something that actually makes the rig quieter.

I image you could take a picture of the spark arrestor before it is reinstalled and carry it with you. No other way outside of pulling it apart.

As far as cleaning, mine would be fairly easy since it is only bolted on by the original tip/arrestor, then slides off the other end. Just keep anti-seize on your bolts, plus I went to stainless bolts to help stop rust.

I received the muffler a couple of days ago. When I get my rig back to town I'll probably have the muffler place add the arrester to the 2nd muffler.

Thanks everyone for their ideas and feedback. I wrapped up mine last week, in a few hours and the noise is a stark contrast. As others have said, you can have a conversation in the unit without screaming. I used 2" everything and have maybe $150 in it and some time. Highly recommend!

Sorry I see that it is ss is everyone using this part number 709994. I ordered this muffler with 2- 1.75 90s and 1- 1.5 90 I figure it might be easier to go from the exhaust tip that is 1.5 to the 1.75 over it then the 1.5 inside that then the other end of the 1.5 inside the 1.75 of the new muffler. Creating a 180. Wow lol if that works right I should have a left over 1.75 90 to put on the tail pipe. I guess I will be the pioneer for the 850 guys.

Just to clarify, inside the cab noise is a stark difference, or outside the cab? Never mind, reread that. I've read that most of the noise was coming from the intake. Did you also install sound deadening material and/or heavier clutch weights?

that a boy Jomo, way to step up for us lowly X2850 riders on this adventure. Looking forward to your findings. I am also very interested in the outcome as I use mine a lot for hunting with my 850 and stealth and quiet would be a good thing.

Yes, inside noise is noticeable quieter. Before the second exhaust having a conversation inside the cab on the trails was all about impossible as we all know. A few days after I installed the exhaust we took a 3 day trip in dense woods and no regrets. I had installed sound deadening underneath the rear cupholders the week of purchase and I couldn't notice a difference at all. I might consider clutch weights down the road.

Whatever happened to the question that I believe Rebel asked way back in this thread? That is why can't a single muffler be had that is quieter than the stock one?

I believe it would be nearly impossible to find a muffler small enough that would be very quiet given the RPM's these things run at. Not to mention finding one with the correct inlet coming in from the side instead of the end.

Below is a picture of an original muffler...

I finished my setup today. I went another route with 2.5" pipe, and a MagnaFlow Round Muffler which I knew would not be "Quiet", but hoped to kill the high RPM volume.

At idle it is pretty damn quiet, running down the road at 7K rpm, it is noticeably quieter, I can actually hear the clutch and belt noise.

Are you guys taking the spark arrester out.
I am thinking of gutting all that out making a bigger hole let it breathe a little bit better. Also this is going to make the exhaust way lower to the ground. Might not be good for water crossing.

I did not. I figured adding the extra muffler and assumed restriction wouldn't make much difference. But honestly, even with the spark arrestor and extra muff, I noticed very little if any power loss.

Just looking at the factory muffler I posted a few posts up, the inlet to the muffler has a 90 degree bend. Definitely not optimal for max hp so not worth doing relatively minor things to get every bit of perfect flow when it already hits a wall when it comes of of the engine.

I'm thinking of gutting the factory arrester and leaving it on the original muffler and adding the weller tip to the added muffler. I ride in the national forests quite a bit and have had rangers check to make sure I have one. Then if I need to pull the new muffler off I can just unbolt it from the original one. I will be putting antisieze on all the bolts. I have already changed them to stainless. I am not too worried about any HP loss since I don't do much hot rodding.
