As you can see, the new RMAX2/4 1000 models are poised to compete directly with the Polaris General. I've included KRX and Honda Talon X4 specs just because I know some were curious if it would compete with those models. The green highlighted numbers designate the winners in each category, keeping mind the first 2 columns are being compared between the RMAX2 and General, and columns 3 and 4 between the RMAX4 and General XP 4. KRX and Honda aren't ranked because those numbers are just for reference.

Almost forgot the top speed of the RMAX is 70 MPH and has a CVT and dry sump just like the X2/X4. They basically super-sized the 847 cc engine (not bored out, it's a completely new engine).

Is this the same cvt as the X2? How will it hold up to 1000cc and 30's? I have 30's on my X2 with HW sheave. I can tell you it does not like 30's in high gear. Always smell burnt rubber. No matter if I'm going down the road, only been on road twice, or a quick blip of throttle in the yard. Low gear is great! No problems!

Do you think the drive mode is a way to protect the cvt and a selling feature? I have something similar on my truck. Economy makes it a dog. The custom tune makes it roast the tires off when I take off. I could see how this could govern your foots throttle input to save wear and tear on the cvt
It's beefed up.........all components including the wet clutch, just like the X2/X4's was beefed up from the Gen 1's. I'm fairly confident that Yamaha engineers paid attention to the weak points in the X2/X4 components and beefed those up.

The drive mode is an optimization. Yamaha was really smart and want more of your add-on money. I'm sure the aftermarket will still try to come out with improved tunes, but Yamaha already took it upon themselves to give you that via OEM. 91 octane is required for the RMAX now. Trail Mode is standard for base and then you can upgrade that or if you have the XTR/LE, the select-ability is there and the tune changes for your conditions.

I really like this, BUT I would have liked to have seen Crawl and Trail modes use 87 octane and then Sport require 91. Only thing is this leave Yamaha up to liability if the owner fills up with 87 and then goes out in Sport Mode and blows his engine.

So in short, it really is pre programmed for the terrain\condition you plan on driving in. You don't need a whole lot of engine braking in Sport mode so I'm sure the throttle mapping for when you take your foot off the gas is very mild vs Crawling.

I thought about that, but really, if you want something to compete with the Talon X2, you should be looking at YXZ 1000 specs. I'm really inundated from this release and haven't slept for weeks. If things slow down, I'll see if I can add it.

Does it change the tune or does it only change the throttle input sensitivity. Because those are two different things. Kind of like a pedal commander or hypertech react for a vehicle only changes the throttle input sensitivity. Does not add power. Only feels like because it opens the TB quicker and more.

Power stays the same in all modes apparently.
This is true, but sort of acts like the Speed Limiting option we already have on the X2/X4 (which still gave you full power up to the reduced speed limit), so you'll still have top speed and maximum power, just throttle input mapping is modified along with spark/fuel tables (I'm guessing on this second item).

An example given for the speed limiting option is that if you're going at 25 MPH flat and then go up a steep incline, additional throttle is added to maintain that 25 MPH limit. Same reasoning applies to the 3 selectable modes on the RMAX.

It requires 91 octane right now. I'm betting an aftermarket flash won't get much more than Performance Mode, BUT we haven't even looked at aftermarket exhausts yet, so there's still room to tune for that I guess.

They fixed a lot of things we griped about:
The knobs for lights and 4WD have white lettering
Instrument cluster centered behind the steering wheel
Accessory switch blanks on the dash are vertical instead of horizontal
Added more switch blanks beside the shifter
Padding around the interior, its more like a car, more like a CAN-AM in that it looks luxurious compared to Gen 1 & Gen !!.

I'm sure I'll notice more, that's just after seeing it the first time online.

The 78" high is 6.5" too high for my tunnel crossing. That's why I'm not buying one. LOL... yeah, I don't want one. Ha Ha!
Yamaha employees lurk this forum and the various FB groups and of course pay attention to the customer surveys they give out. I don't know if the other manufacturers do that to the same level.

I'd have to move the 4x4 knob to the right of the steering wheel in the base version to where the hole is for the drive mode knob goes on the upper trims. Keep the lights on the left that way I'm not fumbling around turning on lights when I need to go into 4x4. Happened a few times in the X4.
