Weller Flash

I've got about 50 miles on since I had the ECU flashed by Weller and so far I've happy I did.

Being able to run regular gas instead of 93 octane is a pretty big deal for me, not so much due to the cost but simply from an availability standpoint. As for losing a few HP due to the lower octane, I have absolutely not noticed any difference in the machine in climbing pretty steep hills or WOT on the pavement, to be honest, crawling around in the woods the machine feels like it has more torque.

The machine is running a lot cooler, riding in temps from 85 to 90 degrees the machine is staying between about 184 to 196.

As for all the things the flash is supposed to do, not sure if I'll ever really notice in the way I ride.

I did my first ride last weekend with the Weller reflash, we went a little over 200 miles very happy with the way it preformed as well. Also did the 22 gram clutch weight change that did help with the engine noise level. Weller did a great job on shipping as well they shipping it back out the same day it was received by them.

Anyone know what the Weller tune changes? I assume it backs off the timing and increases fuel to run richer, which generally results in a cooler running motor. And at what temperature does the fan cycle on and off before the tune? Thought I saw the Weller tune has the fan come on 10 degrees cooler, but why? Does the RMAX have an overheating issue? I thought engines generally are more efficiently at higher temps. I'd rather the fan not be running any more than necessary. Has anyone used an IR thermometer to measure temps on the motor or exhaust to see how hot it runs before and after tuning?

  • RPM Limits Raised
  • Top Speed Limits removed
  • Fuel Mapping Improved
  • Ignition Mapping Improved
  • AWD Speed Limits removed
  • Drive by Wire Mapping Improved (including all D-Modes)
  • Throttle and Torque Limiting Maps Improved
  • Cooling fan activation lowered by 10 Degrees

Even on my Yamaha atv, I had always felt that the machine's fan would kick on too late. 225 degrees. So i am happy with my RMAX kicking on 10 degrees sooner. I have put on over 100 miles with the tune, the fan isn't on more than normal that I have noticed

So what happens when you have your machine at the dealer? I'm sure this voids the warranty which really isn't my concern but I know on my truck tune if I don't reflash to stock the dealer will do it.

How do you get the weller tune back? Buy a 2nd stock ECU to put in the machine when you take it to the dealer?

Buy the dynojet PV3 with the weller maps. You can switch to different maps in a matter of minutes. Even back to stock. To me this is the only way to go. You can have all the weller maps ready to go, even the 87 octane ones. I have this set up and it works great. Yes its a more expensive option, but you get 5 maps and the ability to switch it back to stock

My take is unless you have an ECU related warranty issue you have nothing to be worried about. The dealer tech doesn’t give a crap about a tune if he’s working on your rear axle. He’s getting paid by the job. No time to go sideways and check your ECU. My opinion.

You may be right, it just concerns me that if my ecu pops a code and I have to take it in, even if it has nothing to do with the tune, the dealer will have to plug into your ecu to see and clear the codes. And with these machines having so many sensors, just like cars, it will pop a code even if the only issue is the sensor went bad.

If these dealers are anything like auto dealers they'll reflash your ecu back to stock. Been there. Then what? Unless you have another ecu that holds the tunes or the dynojet you're back to the starting point.

Just saying, if you're going to have a tune you must have a way to restore it.

If you think the Rmax has a jerky throttle, get it out of sport and put it in crawl mode and save your money for those portals.
It’s praised as having the smoothest throttle on the UTV market.

An aftermarket drive mode switch is really inexpensive in comparison to a flash/tune and will accomplish your goal! Even an OEM switch is less money.
After a windshield, it should be the next addition for every base model owner.
Your the first I’ve ever heard call the throttle jerky, even in the default setting of trail mode but crawl mode will allow someone with a leg twitch to drive it smoothly.

Like mentioned in a prior post, the D mode switch will fix your throttle jerkiness. Crawl mode is what you are after. On super bumpy trails all I use is crawl mode, you will see what I mean once you get it.

Two options, both plug and play.

That's normal running temps. It's a high performance motor and it gets hot. I have hit 225 climbing a constant grade at 52 mph no overheating warning. It was 103 degrees that day. LOL.
