Thoughts On SuperATV Rhino 2.0 Axles - Knocking Already

14132 Views 177 Replies 32 Participants Last post by  wolvymanx4
So a few weeks ago on the RMAX FB group there was a guy with an RMAX4 that had just installed Rhino 2.0 axles and was having a CV knocking on his rear passenger side. One other person also chimed in with a video of their Rhino 2.0 doing the same thing. I had chimed in on that post saying that I had just installed them without any knocking issues. I would put a link to that video but it was a FB upload not a Youtube so I couldn't figure a way to do it. But three rides after my installation I am now having the same issue on my drivers side rear axle. I already changed the passenger side twice because the first one I put in had a hole in the inner boot right out of the box. SuperATV was awesome and warrantied it right away but now this on the drivers side. I am tired of changing axles and not being able to ride. I haven't contacted them on this one yet due to my work schedule lately but here is a video of me going down my street. You can hear it distinctly though. I'm not sure if they had received a bad batch or what but so far I am not impressed with these axles.

I heard somebody else say that. I don't think its the axle. One of ours had the stock axles clicking so they grabbed a Rhino before putting it back in the barn...and still clicked. The Talon does the same thing. Stock axles...aftermarket...no difference. The machines that click...just keep clicking no matter what you put in there.

One of my buddies in the shop says the diff or hubs just don't like the angle. We haven't narrowed it down exactly yet, but stock and aftermarket can do it.

I think its something in the trans. Maybe the input bearing...or could be a hub bearing. We can't seem to recreate it with stock or our axles when its off the ground up on a lift.

The swap back to OEM will answer this issue 100%.
It's hard to beat OEM items with China aftermarket items IMO.
What?!? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Where do you think that OEM axle is coming from? Lol! OEM's are shopped out to the lowest bidder. This is also why Yamaha had an axle shortage to begin with.

@wolvymanx4 have you tried greasing your wheel bearings?

We have only been able to recreate it with that one OEM axle. The new Rhino cured it...but, I'm guessing it'll come back at some point. From this thread...it sounds like the axle isn't going to be the "cause" of the noise. I mentioned before that we've gone over this with the Talon. Same thing. People bought Rhino's because they thought the stock axles were popping. Rhino cured the pop...then it came back. Turns out it wasn't related to the axle.

I'd drive really slow, and have somebody put their hand on the outside of the wheel to see if they can feel it when it pops. Just don't run over anybody's toes.

Nah...no bad batch or bad design. You just got a clicker....and that's annoying. We've already put out more than Yamaha in the last year, and they've doing great. So far, we warrantied less than 1% and put out over 2k axles. The 2.0's are vastly superior to the OEM axles. No doubt about.

Just like those OEM clickers....sometimes it happens, and its annoying.

Its easy to jump to conclusions on this stuff, but I see it on the grand scheme and these axles have been awesome for the number out there and percentage that have been warrantied. Warranty is solid. No worries there. The excitement about some of this stuff online far exceeds the reality of it.

A week ago it was his transmission and today he just got a clicker.
Would be nice if he also got a full refund.
A week ago...we all tried to troubleshoot his click..along with others with OE clicking sounds. Thanks for participating, @DWRAT . Axles make that noise sometimes. Experienced and more extreme riders know these noises are fairly common in all ATV's, UTV's, and SxS's. Our axle happens to have the best warranty in the biz, and I see no other issue than the left rear that makes a click...which I would gladly warranty (even though a click is quite a stretch under any standard axle warranty). I'm sure the fellas with the OEM axle click understand that Yamaha would never cover that under warranty, but we can.

Just thought I'd share that to really cause some paranoia. Enjoy and always do a good pre ride inspection.
Just wait till people start buying these EV SxS's that are coming. They're silent, and you're going to hear everything.... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

One more thing about SxS axles....

These are considered a "fuse," and considered a sacrificial part on these machines. The 2.0's are way stronger than stock, but are still designed to break just before damaging your diff or trans. Its way cheaper and easier to replace an axle than to replace your transmission...etc. Breaking an axle isn't a scary bad thing. Its totally normal in this sport. The clicking is fine...annoying, but fine. Not normally covered under the warranty, but I'd cover it in a heartbeat on a fresh install.

We will continue seeing this with the Rmax. The same is going on with the Talon OE axles. The rear end suspension doesn't play will with any axle angle. They also don't respond well to much side load. Since this has been brought up, I've started noticing a TON of complaints on popping OEM axles. A lot of guys are buying ours, and it fixes it most of the time....but sometimes they still pop. This will happen the other way too, I'm sure. Our CV's are much bigger...allowing more angle. This should be the fix, technically, but there will always be exceptions.

A few years ago we decided to build a line of unbreakable axles. They were going to be called the White Rhino (white powdered shaft and white boots). These were going to be the last axle you'd ever buy...mostly for the GIANT tire mud guys. Well....we decided to kill the line before releasing them because all they were doing was grenading differentials and transmissions in testing. We figured having the unbreakable axle that wrecked machines was probably not the best thing for the guys that thought the unbreakable axles were what they needed.

This is what I’m wondering. Is this just a rear of the Rmax 4 issue on clicking.
Are front axles of both machines and rear axles of the 2 seat typically fine, OEM and/or Rhino.
Let’s not as a group get scared away from the only other axles we can get if it’s pretty much just an Rmax 4 rear axle thing!
So far....I'm pretty sure they have all been rear 4 seaters that I've noticed. And the 4 seater does have a different rear suspension design. That could be a contributing factor.
WolvymanX4, did Super ATV end up warrantying the axles or giving you a refund?
I know he posted he would stand behind them.
Don't you worry buddy. ;) He knows I'll take care of him.

So when I ordered my axle I selected all the Rmax 4 options on website. Are these 2 seater axles? The website I believe allowed this. Look at the box your axle came in that you ordered for your 4 seater, if it matches the number below, its was wrong. @SuperATV Please explain this if I am wrong, but it says "front only" for Rmax 4

Yeah, same axles. I brought this thread up, and mentioned that the OEM rears are popping on lifted machines and that I've seen a few of ours starting to pop too. My testing engineers just turned it off for the 4 seater and they want to try to replicate it here. So far, no luck. Our OEM rears were popping though. Can't get them 2.0s to pop yet. We'll probably turn them back on on the website soon.

I also checked the warranty numbers and we're running at about 1%, so that's pretty awesome.

You have to measure fully extended and fully compressed. The Rhino 2.0 have a whole lot of plunge on both ends. They are well within the tolerances of both, the 2 seater and 4 seater.

Another thing about the 2.0's... They are all the same, from machine to machine. The only thing that changes from machine to machine is the splined shaft and the shaft length. The CV internals are the same for these as they are for the high HP Turbo machines.
So the Rhino 2.0s for the Rmax rear are universal for both the 2 seater and the 4 seater? Is that what you are clarifying? They are universal because they have so much free play in the joint that they meet tolerances for both models?
Why do you have the option to choose a model when purchasing then? Why did you remove Rmax 4 rears as an option, and not just list them as compatible to both?
Yes, the axle plunge of the 2.0 axle exceeds the fully compressed and fully extended requirements of both the 2 seat and 4 seat machines, making them universal for both models. You have to choose a model because that's just part of the software. We can track how many are purchased for 4 seaters or 2 seaters and get a better idea of how many of each model are out there and what their needs are. This is why you will often see a # and letters at the end of a part number on our website. The # means that same part is located somewhere else on the website (fits something else), and the letters after the # indicate what machine it is for. Just for market research. The 4 seat option was removed because I do a report ever week on everything I've read, and my engineers check everything out. So far, we haven't been able to replicate the issue with the 2.0, but we do have some clicking OEM axles. I'm betting we'll turn it back on on the website pretty soon.
Nope. Haven't been able to recreate it. Its been out on the bounty course a few times and out at the farm getting beaten up.

I think the 4 seaters are going to see this with OEM's more...but still the occasional aftermarket HD axle with a bigger CV. The full drop suspension angle on rear on the 4 seaters is way more than it should be for any axle. Limit straps in the rear should help.

The guys that had it, OEM and ours, had it in a slow turn...right from a stop. I was afraid it was the diff, and maybe some kind of weird side load thing because the rear is locked.
Nope. No issues here. Like in my response to your PM, I may have the guys keep them off the website for awhile till all this forum drama subsides and the community realizes the issue is with the suspension and not with the axles, OEM or ours. But currently, no issues on ours.

Actually, yes finally.

So yesterday I finally decided to put the incident behind me and finally warranty my axle so I went to SuperATV 's website and filled out their online warranty form. They contacted me a couple hours later asking me for pictures, as I expected, so I sent them the pics and a video of the knocking. I wake up today to a response wanting me to call in and pay a $50 warranty fee to process the warranty. Ok. I know that I never read the warranty disclaimer so I assumed 18 months was 18 months but turns out after 60 days they charge this fee. If I knew this I wouldn't have waited all winter. Personally I think I was pretty easy going through this whole thing but now I'm pissed. I'm not planning on even running their axlex again so why pay a fee. As many of you said. You guys believe I should just get a full refund. I'm thinking about contacting my credit card company now and putting it in their hands. Decisions, decisions. We'll see......
Hey bud. The guys on the phones wouldn't know that you were talking to me about this. You know I got you. Shoot me your order number and email in a PM. I got you covered buddy.
