Compared to a paddle, they aren’t good in sand, compared to any other riding tire they are excellent in sand. An open tread tends to dig down, as well as a round top tire. Closed tread types get no propulsion. The Roxzilla is pretty flat top for floatation and closed tread that’s doesn’t dig and also drifts sideways pretty decent. The huge side wall lugs act as paddles. Hill climbing with them compared to other desert terrain tires is no comparison. I’m not suggesting someone buy them for sand riding but people also wouldn’t ride slick rock or hard pack and gravel with paddles. It’s a good 1 tire fits both worlds in plenty of western riding.
To Glocks point, they aren’t a good all terrain tire for general riding out west as far a the stickies go due to the wear rate and price. Just about any tire will get enough traction on dry desert rock trail riding, however, where I spend a lot of time they continue to take over just like in the east. Spend any time at Moab or Sand hollow, two of the most popular places to ride out west and you can’t consider them to be an east coast tire.
The only place we have found them not to do a great job is deep snow. They are to closed tread and unlike sand that is heavy, the lighter snow has no respect for the side lugs on the tires.
