We use them for work in the States too but mostly for different kind of work. Farm and ranch hauling and pulling things. Some Ranchers are using them for round up or checking stock but IMO a horse is still the better tool. We don't have to contend with the marsupials though. I raise goats and they like to get into places you can't take anything with 4 wheels.

In Aust station owners are struggling a bit since the major manufacturers of quads pulled out, many stations brought 4 or 5 of the last available so they would have good vehicles for a few years to come. The SXS being much wider than the quads makes it hard in the tight country which is not accessible with a SXS. Horse as said is the go for this type of country but due to vastness of a lot of stations you would need two or three for each rider to get a days mustering done. Nowadays they bring in the choppers for that type of country to flush the beasts out.
