Yeah, they run pretty hot. It's right below the exhaust. Some put a heat shield above the diff but most just run without anything. Haven't had any problems at all running without anything myself.
Stuff gets hot. Try touching your engine after running 100 miles in it. Engine has way more parts in it too and it holds up just fine. Remember your hands are made of flesh and your rear diff is made of metal.
