I just stumbled on this thread. My '21 Rmax2 leaked from one of the bottom bolts of the ing case cover, near the water pump and pump drain.

I pulled the cover and disassembled the water pump. Replaced all the seals in the water pump and cleaned up a groove in the impeller (on backorder). Side note next time message with the water pump I'd buy the whole assembly.

The ing engine cover gasket was on backorder so I used yamabond equivalent and sealed up the case. One of the lower bolts also gets some yamabond on the threads.

I'm pretty sure it was just the case gasket leaking, but not often a case just starts leaking on a new machine.

Not a fun job at all. Worst part for me was getting the passenger floor board in and out for fuel tank removal

Yes that is quite a treat. That thing is quite stiff but flexible enough I found out (on X2), as imagine you have. Had to pry the top of it under the dash edge AND the top left of it by the console down and out. Then getting it back in is ... well ... I found it depends on how you hold your tongue and what phase the moon is in. But in the end it can be done!

Its also a bit tricky to install the new gasket if you had one. Easy to damage the gasket installing it, if you had one, as the cover snaps back in place with the strong magneto magnet.

are you saying it would be best to buy the whole cover assy, number #18 looks like you get everything cover and new waterpump. just need gasket #35 and bolt everything on ?

If you're digging into the waterpump and replacing parts, for me it would be easier and better piece of mind to replace the assembly. If you add up the mechanical seal, impeller, oil seal and bearing it's not much more.

I think mine was the cover gasket, but it was hard to see under there with a mirror. I used a yamabond for the gasket as it was on backorder. I believe per the service manual you're supposed to use 1 new cover bolt #38 with yamabond on the threads. I cleaned mine and reused as it was backorder as well

Yep, I messed with it for a while trying to find the combination. Ended up putting gloves on and accepting I may break it. It bends more than you would think 😆

It seemed easier forcing it back in, but I got it good and warm in the house first.

I didn't have a gasket so I used a Threebond

Whats the best way to drain the coolant without making a big mess?
I use a dedicated oil drain pan for coolant only. Low enough to fit under the machine. Won't spill a drop. If you get one with a spout on it then makes it easier to save it in a jug or dispose of it. Or a washing basin from the dollar store works. You do know there is a small screw under the machine for draining purposes?
