I'll put this here instead of in general discussion, and add to it as I go along.
I decided I didn't like the look of the mill finish aluminum I used for the mud guard straps or on the windshield. I bought a can of black spray on bed liner (Krylon). I removed all the parts and block sanded them until they had a pretty uniform scratch pattern on them. Along with the Aluminum, I painted the screw heads for the mud flaps, but left the ones in the windshield stiffeners raw, for a more industrial look. The 2" conduit hangers also got a dose of it. I think they turned out nicely.
