OK wtf is that!!!

Got home, pumped to try it. Well the front universal was OK. The middle universal i though just popping out the console was enough, no way air filter in the way, likely need to remove entire center piece eh? So that's a 2 beer job. So now the back, wtf man!! I can get the top a arms but bottom no deal. Going tomorrow to buy 300lbs of salt bags.

On another note, how can you tell if they need grease? It feels like um pumping but nothing going in..I'm on tight even with pressure applied, is grease suppose to come out the ends??or that sealed?? Wtf setup is this? My Yamaha nytro sled is a dream compared to this nightmare

Has anyone used the flush mount zerk fittings near the lower a-arms with any success?
I have tried to replace the upper zerks with a 45 degree using M6-metric but I cannot get it to screw in. The threads must be different. Does anyone have the numbers on the replacement zerks for the wolverine? Napa & Ace Hardware did not have what I need and I have been looking on line. I have been considering the flush mount fittings for the lower zerks.

I completely removed the spindle assembly amd used 45 degree M6 from NAPA on both upper and lower. Sorry I don't have the part #, but M6 is correct.
Like it has been said, a plastic washer will help index the fitting to the best direction. Also, I used a Dremel to take a little metal off the new fitting and the A-arm. That provides enough clearance to keep the movement from breaking the fitting. Just did a ride, no problems. Horrible design though.

I have a 660 and a 550 grizzly and neither are difficult to grease. I put 45 degree fittings on the top of the 660 so I could still grease it through the ITP wheels, but that was my own doing
Hammer, where are you getting your replacement 45 degree fittings? I have tried Napa, Ace Hardware etc: purchased M6 and they will not screw in. They are slightly too big or the threads do not match. Help please!

I weighted the back end down to get access to the 4 rear zerks. I could get on them but none of them took grease. then the gun stuck on one of them and I had to pry it off. Im thinking it would just be easier to spray some lithium grease in there best I can and just replace em when they go bad. I cant see going through this much trouble every couple hundred miles.

I put the Wolverine on my trailer and cranked the rear end down with rachet straps. I had it about as far as I could get it. I managed to get the rear bottom zerks greased but still had a time getting the grease coupler on. I don't like putting all that stress on the springs and will probably try another way next time. This is a real pain. Yamaha should provide a special adapter, coupler or whatever so we would not have to go through this every time.

We Wolvy owners better start writing our letters. Fix it or I might be convinced to go elsewhere. The dealers we make rich should also go to bat for us.

Yamaha has been doing it like this for years, look at all the ATV's, same set up.

I am new to the Wolverine, love it except for gear whine and how hard it is to grease! Followed your suggestion as to weight in the rear and it works, I can get the straight grease gun fitting on all four zerts.

Now that I can get it on, did you have any problem getting it to take grease? Not one of the four rear fittings will take grease, do I need a bigger grease gun? Any suggestions appreciated.

I am fairly new to the Wolverine X4. I have 15 hrs. on mine. I read this thread last week and was not looking forward to greasing this. I had an Outlander Max before this and there were 2 zerks that always made me a bit upset. I ended up buying a different gun with different fittings to try this. While reading this thread I was preparing for the same. I went to grease the rear upper and lower and I found 45deg zerks on them. They were very easy. Nothing special and no lifting and no removing the tire. I was thinking maybe the factory changed this but I'm guessing it was the dealer. They have always been awesome for me. just wanted to let you know that the 45deg work great.

One question I do have is the owners manual mentions greasing the steering knuckles and do not mention the driveshaft. I looked at both of these and found no place to grease. Is it possible that the steering and driveshaft are sealed and do not need grease?

Thanks in advance and I am really enjoying and learning a lot on this forum.

The front driveshaft has 2 places to be greased. At the front diff and then there's a slot in the skid plate to get the middle U-joint. I can also attest to the X2/X4 being easy to grease.

Even if you drop the suspension down by removing the shock and lock the grease gun on the fitting it will not push much grease anywhere unless the bushings are already worn out.

I have found the only way to get the bushings properly greased is to disassemble the bearing carrier from the arms and clean everything and grease it up well during reassembly. Even if you could get grease to go in it is going to take the easier way out and never push out all the old and replace it with new on both bushings.

It isn't hard to do at all and you are sure you get all the crap out and only good stuff back in there. After doing it once you will agree it is worth it to know the condition of what is inside and your doing your best to preserve it's life span. And once you see the length of bushings and the tight clearances they have you will understand why you can't pump any grease into the center chamber and expect it to completely push the old out and replace it with new which is what really need to be done.

I read your tip in 2016 on grinding one side of the grease fitting. Are you still using this method today? Will it work on all the zerks ? How many total zerks are there on the Wolverine. Thanks for all you do for our sport

I asked about them after buying mine this winter. Dealer showed me the 4 zerks, all visible from the rear. I didn't see that its difficult to access but an not so chubby hose end would help if yours is big or thick.

2018 R-spec

Mine look easy, Yamaha engineers must have listened to the dealer mechanics!

FYI I had an issue with my new tractor taking grease on certain fittings and thought they were full. Further examination I found the internal ball and spring shifted (bad crimp) causing an internal blockage so it wouldn’t take grease. I replaced several fittings and later had several others do the same.
If you get a zurk or grease fitting that won’t take grease remove it and test!
