    What am I missing?

Full disclosure, I'm not a Facebook guy. Never have been, never will be. I do have a Facebook account that I created (with bare minimum info) to find pro 2nd amendment rallies in my region during the previous occupants of the White House. And I do look at the Market Place from time to time. That's been all of my Facebook activity... just not a big fan. For those who are, please don't be offended as that's not the point of this thread.

That being said, I do like to read and learn from others who share my interests which brings me to ask "what am I missing?" I clicked on the link to the X2/X4 Facebook page and then clicked the JOIN GROUP button. There was a few questions to screen spammers that I answered honestly. Then came the declaration if there was nothing in my profile to indicate my SXS interests, I would likely not be accepted in the group. Okay not a problem, life is good.

Although I am curious, what benefits are there to joining the group vs. being a visitor? I see what appears to be current posts by members, links to other sites work as they should and there are lots of pictures. Are there special member discounts on parts, invitations to private parties with Yamaha factory guys giving away accessories, tips and tricks only the elites have access to, half naked women serving up free beer? There must be something pretty special to alienate those who have chosen not to be consumed with social media and hang their a$$ out there for the world to see. Please enlighten me, "what am I missing"?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hey Mike,

If it's the page in my sig, then I'm the creator of that FB page. It's really hard to screen spammers sometimes and usually it's really easy to approve of them if I see anything remotely-related to off-roading. I may not see anything off-roading-related but maybe I see that you're a hunter or outdoor activist. If your from Africa, have a bunch of porn links in your profile and nothing remotely related to the above, then it's a good bet you're a spammer. Infidel joined and I initially blocked him because he had no FB profile.

Forums are the best source for easily-searchable information and the best way to post information such as tutorials and such. You can search for keywords in a FB group or page but it's not as easy and you often have to wade through lines of irrelevant material. FB is more about fellowship and instant gratification. On a forum like this, you may ask a question and it may take longer to get an answer whereas FB groups notifcation features and the fact that most everyone is addicted to FB, you'll get answers within seconds. There's also a lot of BS that comes with FB.

If you're just out there for information, join the group and turn off notifications. If you want to fellowship about the X2/X4 and give likes to someone's video or experience then that's what FB is for. Otherwise just be happy to be part of this forum.

FB is a streaming feed of info that's harder to filter but as previously stated, instantaneous vs a more-structured forum for information like this one.

    Thanks MassiveOverkill,

It was. Again, my intent was not to offend anyone but wanted to understand what the benefits of being a group member was given my ignorance of Facebook protocol. I have always found these message boards to be a wealth of knowledge and have been a participant on many having lots of varied interests. I have more time on my hands these days (mostly retired) and have exhausted the content I currently subscribe to. With what you contribute to this forum, I guess I expected the mother lode on the linked Facebook page. Just looking to expand my resources... thanks for all you do for the community.

I appreciate your candid characterization of the Facebook forum vs. message boards like this one. The inability to filter the spam from valuable content is likely why the format never appealed to me. There was hope to make contact with like minded enthusiasts with the possibility of joining in on group rides or organized gatherings but there doesn't seem to be a lot of that kind of interaction on Facebook either. Maybe need to look for that more on a local or regional basis.

Thanks again for your clarification and will eagerly monitor the Wolverine Forums for the next bit of Wolverine discussion and enlightenment.

Us older guys like Forums like this where we can read about modifications, issues, and riding areas around the country. The younger crowd leans more to the FB type format where they throw out the same questions over and over and require instant responses or they throw a hissy fit. FB is getting better with more users and now that the search function actually works you can sometimes find information that you would like to know about. For me it's still much easier in a forum like this with sub-forums to find particular info and experiences.

I'm not a fan of Facebook but I think you're wrong about who uses it. It looks to me like it's mostly people in their mid-40's and above. I know my 20-something kids and their friends don't use it. My wife and I (in our 50's) did an overnight group ride after Xmas that was all couples in their 40's, 50's, and 60's and they all posted their pictures on Facebook. My mid-70's mother was upset when I disabled my Facebook account. Massive got it right - people who want detailed information and searchability like forums. People who want a sense of community (a false sense in my view) use Facebook.

I also don't use it no would even if that organization only supports it for their product. I go elsewhere.
    - Email is point to point as is should be in 99% of the cases. You don't want a barrage of responses from others who it wasn't intended at nor do you (I) want everyone to know what i am doing, thinking or going!!
    - it can backfire if certain information is available and accurate EG Birthday (gives the info sufficient for identity theft, account hacks and/or account hijacking and more) Site that ask for it. I outright LIE!!! They don't need to know my birthday. Why, age group maybe!!
    - Whatsapp is a good alternate where control and communications are more controllable and private as you use it.

I would agree with your view on privacy. I never give out my real name, cell number or my birthday on the internet. I have a couple of friends that have had identity theft issues. I enjoy forums like this but I don’t feel compelled to share all my personal information. I do have a Facebook account but rarely use it. To be honest I don’t know how to use it properly. Now I can’t get signed on because they want my cell number and I’m not willing to share it. I have several family members that share too much personal information in my opinion.
I’ve seen people post their home address. I was a member of a GPS forum and saw members posting GPS tracks showing where they live. It would be easy for someone to target their home especially knowing they have a new vehicle, ATV’s, side by side, snowmobile or other toys.
I may be overly cautious but I agree with you Tripplec regarding sharing personal info. I don’t want to deal with police for identity theft or stolen property.
