    Differential

Am I the first to destroy my front diff? On last ride I noticed a loud popping several times. Got it of the ground yesterday, at idle in 4wd I could grab left front wheel and stop it and I could feel the diff slip and hear the loud pop! Turned off engine, shift to neutral 2wd and I could only turn left front wheel about a 1/4 of a turn and it would bind. Right front wheel free spins no problem. Am I correct with my diagnosis of destroyed diff?

I’m not sure!! I know that the way the limited skip works, with both wheels off the ground, the right spins freely and the left feels rough. It’s fooled more than one of us into thinking we had a bad wheel bearing but it’s normal.
I’d put it in diff lock and do the same test. Possibly you do have a problem but I’m suspicious it’s not your diff.
If you had it in four wheel drive and had a lot of pressure on the front end the popping sound was likely your front drive shaft torque limiter doing what it’s intend to, protecting the front diff!

Before I got too far in the anxiety guessing I would pull the diff motor and check it and then check the relay function if necessary. have you been shifting on the fly or at a dead stop?

Never shift on the fly, but the popping is going on smooth trails so I do not think it’s torque limiter

Some of us have got a popping sound with a cv joint going bad, only on the rear. Might look into that as well!

I have gone from 2WD to 4WD while moving and back. It sync in without issue. Low range would certainly need to stop. Not different than an SUV doing that. I just would change the high modes with aggressive acceleration or power being applied.

The shift motor has a slide that adjusts the 2wd, 4wd and diff lock by length of slide. If it is not making full travel is where I would check. You can do it jacked up to check the symptoms reported. There are some folks that specialize in the front diff motor and relays....501 parts, I think is their name, you can easily find with a search.

I would suspect the CV. Pull the left shock and jack up the A arm on that side so that the axle joints are perfectly straight and see if feels the same.
