    Dropped valve thread

As with the bent shock mount thread I feel it's time to do a thread on certain units dropping valves to determine if this is just a few vehicles affected by a drunken worker or if the problem is more wide spread. I know of 5 owners who have experienced this, all 2020 models and it happened either immediately or within a couple hundred miles of use. Paraphrasing what the dealer told the customer: 'the valves were installed incorrectly' and pictures lead me to believe that the valve keepers weren't installed correctly. As a result the valve(s) dropped and bent causing various extremes of damage from 'simple' bent valve to more extensive 'grenading'.

    UPDATE:

Looks like the valve spring retainer locks have been reverted to the older part number, so this may be looking more like a part issue than improper installation:

If you look, they've already updated the valve spring lock retainer part on 2020's. 'Old' part was 3S0-E2118-00-00 and is now replaced by 1WG-12118-00-00, which ironically is the 2019 part#

So please fill out the following (please only fill this out if you're experiencing the issue):

    -Model Year
    -X2 or X4
    -Trim
-Partial VIN (last 7 digits is fine)
    -Build date if possible
-How many miles when you experienced it
-What were the symptoms leading up to failure
    -Covered/Not Covered under warranty
-What are they doing? New unit, rebuild motor, just top end, etc.
-How many miles when you experienced it

Almost forgot. Here's what my X4 sounded like when it was new. We have some paranoid at the ticking, which is normal valvetrain chatter and injectors pulsing.

Well there's been Chicken Little syndrome going around because of it so I figured we can get some facts and numbers.

-Not sure of build date already back at dealership
-27 miles on Unit when issues started
-Bike will not start with out holding throttle down. Will not idle once started. Lots of valve train noise.
-Hopefully the dealership will get back with me tomorrow on their diagnosis of the unit. I have already spoken to Yamaha Corporate and they are going to try to speak to the dealer to make it right.
-I only had the bike 1 day when it started.

Old proven tech wins again. So why did the drop the original parts I wonder. Save money on different ones maybe. Now its going to cost them. I don't know I'd be happy with a new engine knockup up like that with parts slamming inside. New Engine would be the better solution. How many dealers are truely qualified to do a rebuild to spec's I wonder.

Great, 10 year belt warranty, 6 month on everything else. If they changed the part this quickly, I'm betting we will be seeing quite a few issues. I wonder if Yamaha will issue any kind of a recall........Maybe I better grab the extended warranty while I still can

Any Idea if Yamaha caught this in time to correct it on any of the 20's before they left the factory? I'm thinking not seeing the engines are probably built in Japan and shipped over in a big batch
