    First Engine Oil Change

Just did my engine oil. I followed the book and I have used all but 8 ounces of a full gallon and I am still only at just under half on the dip stick hash marks.

Capacity with filter change is 3.5 quarts (roughly). 8 oz is .25 quarts. I'd go for a decent ride so it warms up to at least 140 F, come back, let it idle for 10 seconds and then check the level. If it's anywhere near half I'd call it good.

This is pretty close to what I just experienced as well. Ended up a little over 3.5 quarts. Took me a while to get there as I was worried about overfilling. I just added a couple ozs each time after the first 2.5 quarts. Now I know for the next time.

In our automobile wet sump systems, we're so used to filling it to the full mark so naturally you have the urge to fill it to the full mark on our X2/X4's. Because it's a dry sump system it's harder to check due to rigmarole you have to go through to get an accurate reading. In this case you don't want to overfill as excess oil will get blown into the air intake tract and accumulate down at the intake drain.

I must have not warmed it up enough the first time. I got it up to full operating temp and checked it after a bit. Now I'm over the full mark by 1/8 to 1/4. Once it's cooled down I'll drain out a little.

I took mine in to the dealer for it's first service and have been on 2 rides since totaling 160 miles. Yesterday I pulled the machine out of the garage and noticed a spot on the floor so I took the intake tube off and 6 oz. of oil came out. I got a service contract so thing like this don't happen. Should have saved the money and done it myself. The proper oil level does make a difference on these machines and more than likely I need a set of plugs now.

It's a royal pain the the azz to get a proper check on the dip stick, especially when the oil is clean. ( hard to see with a white dip stick)
It's all over the place depending on if it's just warmed up or if it's fully hot.
When cold it doesn't even show on the stick after a week of sitting.
There has to be a better way.

    I agree 100%.
It's even hard to get the dip stick out because it hangs up on 2 different ridges I guess.

Be patient, it took Yamaha over a year after the gen 1 was out to get the correct marks on the dipstick!
