I talked to a guy down at Pocahontas ATV resort. He said it basically boiled down to out of town companies buying a bunch of the WV mines and not liking the riders on their land. He said there were stories of them screwing with locals and people going on their active sites and messing things up as retribution. They were going to close pocahontas but they came to an agreement. He said the no go areas will be clearly marked and outside of those no one will mess with you. My group is headed there in 2 months. The red part and the outlaws near it are the biggest affected areas

I rode those systems before, hopefully they don't stop us. Rode around Sophia in an abandoned train tunnel that was carved in.

    West Virginia Trails (Hatfields McCoys)

Headed to Hatfields and McCoys trails in a couple of weeks. Camping at Twin Hallow Resort from 4/1 - 4/8. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. 1st time going there so it will be a new experience for the wife and myself. Any suggestions of other things to see and do would be appreciated. If anyone else will be there during that time, let me know and maybe meet up.

    Thanks

Ok. I looked it up. Looks like you’ll primarily be in the Rockhouse, Devil Anse, and Buffalo Mountain systems. There is a ton of riding there. One thing I’d suggest is of you don’t have or intend to purchase a trail GPS, print out the most current maps of those 3 trails from Hatfield’s website, get them laminated somewhere and take them with you. The laminated copies are great since they are essentially waterproof. The trails are marked exceptionally well. I’d try to see the Devil Anse Hatfield cemetary if I were you. It’s a hike up a pretty good hill off the road though so if you aren’t in shape it will take it’s toll. There is some great scenery down there. Here’s a link to my pics from when we hit that area in 2017.

    Wow!
We are both retired and hopefully we don't have issues like that, or she will never go again. Great video, but sad someone got hurt. Looks like you had a great time. The other couple going with us are very conservative as well, and we won't be doing anything aggressive. I will get those maps as suggested and go from there. Hopefully they have trails for 1st timers. Thank you for all the information you gave me.

They do for sure. The maps are great and the trails are marked well. You can ride at a comfortabe pace on most green/blue. They are marked like ski slopes. Black for hard, blue for moderate, and green for easy. The thing to remember though is that trail conditions are ever changing. If itcstarts to get steep or wet just throw it in 4wd and leave it there. The part in my pics where we were going up over that big mound and the part where we cut the tree were actually on green trails but they had two weeks of rain and there were washouts/down trees all over that HMT crews hadn’t gotten to yet. My buddy is ok now but he broke his shoulder. He was doing something dumb. He was going too fast on a sport quad on the far left edge of a sweeping right turn and tagged a rock with the right front. He now rides a side by side. Ha.
