Just checked my Service Manual. Page 4-9 & 4-10. It shows channel legs up and installing the bolts from above.
I had my factory roof installed with channels down (n). I broke my roof off and just had to replace it. I also swapped my roof cross bars on the cage because the bolts for these brackets pulled out of the tubes. When I put it back together I found the brackets didn't line up like before. I found myself looking to turn them the other way but then I see that the crossbars, which are held in with 2 bolts a side, can rotate a few degrees because these 4 bolt holes are obviously slightly bigger than the bolts and have some wiggle room. Adjusting the "roll" of the crossbar fixed up my issue. Perhaps this is why we are getting different results with people. Also, the front and back cross bar are both drilled and tapped for these brackets, but mine 'seemed' to be slightly different which adds to the difference I came across. Hope this makes sense to all and hopefully this helps with some installs.
